What Are Autoflowers?

Autoflowering cannabis plants are a unique type of cannabis that automatically transitions from the vegetative stage to the flowering stage based on age rather than changes in light cycles. Unlike photoperiodic plants, which require a change in light exposure to trigger flowering, autoflowers will begin to bloom even if they are exposed to continuous light for 24 hours a day.

Characteristics of Autoflowering Cannabis

  1. Light Independence: Autoflowers do not rely on light cycles to flower. They will transition to the flowering stage after about 20 to 30 days of vegetative growth, regardless of the light schedule.
  2. Faster Growth Cycle: The entire life cycle of an autoflower, from seed to harvest, typically takes between 75 to 100 days, making them a quick option for growers.
  3. Potency: While autoflowers historically had lower THC levels compared to photoperiodic strains, modern breeding techniques have significantly increased their potency.
  4. Adaptability: Autoflowers are versatile and can be grown both indoors and outdoors.

Growing Autoflowers

Indoors:

  • Keep lights on for 18 to 24 hours daily throughout the entire grow cycle.
  • For optimal results, a 18 to 20-hour light and 4 to 6-hour dark schedule is recommended to support root development and plant health.

Outdoors:

  • Autoflowers thrive in various outdoor conditions and do not depend on seasonal changes to flower.
